Ikea, the Swedish furnishings chain that's been opening apartments in Paris Metro stations and quarantining off male shoppers, the company that's so revolutionary that it's actually been copied, has cut the bull and gone back to its bread and butter: flat-pack furniture. Its newest ad campaign, promoting its 40 percent off sale, literally reveals just that: furniture created from cardboard flat-pack furniture boxes. The campaign was devised by Italian firm Auge and is a real mind-bender, obviously.

Spruce Up: Upcycled Vintage Furniture Store Profile

SpruceUpLogo.jpg Ginger and Matt Summers sell their unique line of upcycled vintage furniture and accessories at their etsy store, appropriately called Spruce Up.

I hesitate to call what this Cincinnati couple do with furniture "upcycling" because it's so much more than that. As they say in their etsy profile, the couple "creates warm yet modern environments by blending styles such as mid-century modern, vintage industrial and hollywood regency."

Take that dresser in the third photo, for instance – after stripping and painting the base of the cabinet, the couple cut apart old shutters and applied them to the drawer fronts, piece by piece, to create that breathtaking herringbone pattern. And that floor lamp? It's made from an old surveyor's tripod and a vintage lamp shade! Love it!

Today Editor at Large runs an announcement about PetitNest, the relatively new line of kids' furniture from Tiffani Thiessen(aka Tiffani Amber Thiessen aka Valerie Malone aka Kelly Kapowski) and interior designer Lonni Paul. "Rather than worrying about whether you need to go all-pink or all-blue, pick a color you love and design the whole room around that. Then you can truly make it your own," said Thiessen in a statement, eschewing "mass-produced, generic, primary-colored furniture." All items within the PetitNest collection are certified by the Sustainable Furnishings Council. As for price points, the Noe Dresser (above left) costs $1,650; green Odette Glider, $1,390.

Today kicks off the 50th annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile, otherwise known as the Milan furniture fair. The Los Angeles Times calls the event a "design frenzy," with wacky exhibits and installations popping up all over the city. Here now, is a chandelier made of Mini Coopers, which has inspired hearty debate on a Motoring Alliance blog: does this count as a chandelier if there are no actual lights? One commenter contends yes, claiming, "Isn't that what the headlights are for?"

Many folks consider themselves the "pilot" of the bedroom, but finally, at long last, here's a way to make that statement more a truth than a pipe dream: the Mile High Bed from MotoArt, a California-based design firm that crafts furniture from recycled plane parts. The bed, made from polished DC-9 rear stabilizers and a C-130 inner flap, "will lift you to new altitudes of comfort and style" and allow you to "join the Mile High Club without the hassle of going to the airport." Fantastic! Stewardesses, however, are sold separately.

Reality TV: Joan Replaces Melissa's Furniture With Help of Famed Designer

Screen-shot-2011-02-02-at-4.22.42-PM.jpgLast night's episode of Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? included a guest appearance by Sarah Jessica Parker's decorator, Timothy Corrigan—or at the very least his young female associate Julie. (Apparently Corrigan was "out of the country.") Rivers Sr. is outwardly unhappy about this: "When you look up the word 'decorator' in the dictionary," she claims, "you see 'homosexual.'"

Turns out, however, Julie is Julie Fullman, Corrigan's lead interior designer who was part of HGTV's reDesign series as an assistant designer. Guess the pedigree isn't too shabby!

Despite the substitute, Joan agrees to let Julie to take out Melissa's shabby beige California look and replace it with some color and formal pieces (a la her own NYC apartment). While Melissa's away for the night, Joan stages a design coup on the unassuming space, overhauling it completely and giving away all of her daughter's furniture to charity.
