DesignShowcase2011Logo.jpgGot a great design? Let us help you make it big.

This time two years ago we launched our first ever Design Showcase, with the intention of giving a bunch of independent designers a really good soapbox from which to pitch their work. For the lucky finalists, we also wanted to give them even more exposure and see if we could help to boost their careers to a whole new level. Guess what? It worked. In the past 24 months, our winners have had tremendous runs, getting picked up by major newspapers and magazines and watching their businesses skyrocket.

It's time to do it again.

This month we're putting out the call for great, new designs by independent and student designers that promise to make our homes more beautiful and inspiring places to live.

We'll post the best submissions, allow the readers to vote and then give six finalists an unprecedented chance to feature their design and themselves by building their own original post on our site during prime time at the end of September.

Two winners will then be chosen (1 judge favorite and 1 crowd favorite) and each given $10k in advertising on our network and daily emails (if the same design is chosen by both sides, that person will win $20k). This is a golden opportunity to craft an even more personal message and get it in front of our audience of over 7 million monthly readers.

From Peter:

Hi Maxwell,

Going into this competition I was a complete unknown. Although I am a professional artist in Hollywood, I had never shown my furniture to anyone beyond friends and family. In the year since the Design Showcase, I have officially started my own design and furniture business, www.petersid.com. I have developed a really cool line of furniture which is currently in the final stages of design before manufacturing. I've been featured on blogs from around the world, and increased my visibility and credibility as a designer greatly.

I am most proud however of having "bottles of hope" shown in a museum alongside some of the hottest emerging designers today. I went so see Arik Levy's Chandeliers at the Santa Monica museum of art only a few months before entering the Design Showcase. I would have never thought my work would have been shown in a museum only a few months later. It even got me a little blurb on Elle Decor!

If I can pass on a word to anyone thinking of entering this year... DO IT... NOW! I came very close to not entering simply out of the fear of being judged. Looking back, I can't imagine if I hadn't. It was a truly great experience, and I am very proud to have been a part of it!

Thanks!

-Peter Sid

From Tamar:

Hi Maxwell,

The competition increased traffic to my website and resulted in additional orders. Even a year later, people sometimes find me through the apartment therapy website. I truly appreciate having had the opportunity to participate in the designer showcase competition.

Regards,
Tamar

This year we're going to run just like we did last year and open submissions today. So, if you've got a great design or a friend who does AND you want to get it out there, now's your chance.

Note: Voting for each submission is open for 4 days (96 hours) this year.

• 2010 Winners Post
• 2010 Contest All Entries Post
• 2010 Judges Post

• 2009 Winners Post
• 2009 Contest All Entries Post
• 2009 Judges Post

This year's judges have not yet been announced. Last year's judges were Amy Butler, David Netto and Aaron Lown & John Roscoe Swartz of BUILT.

• Independent & student designers from all over the world
• Design couples and teams are welcome

We're looking for folks who need exposure and a big push to get them to the next level. Already designing for a big company? That's okay, but send us stuff you're doing on the side. We want to help you, not the big company.

• One original design that has reached prototype stage or beyond.
• No designs are eligible that have been purchased by or licensed to another company.
• Designs can be for home furnishings, accessories, lighting, appliances or textiles.
• Only one design per designer, please, so choose your best design. If you submit more than one, we'll choose the one we think is best.

If it goes into the home, we're open to it. It can be decor, furnishing or materials related, just don't send us a car design.

• Your name and contact info
• Materials description
• Your pitch! (@ 200 words)
• A link to your site if you have one (hey, it's 2011, every designer should!)
• Image of design drawing
• Three photographs of prototype or finished product (This is important. You must have taken it at least to prototype stage.)
• One photograph of yourself (Feel free to dress up and look as important as you feel).

Give us your best pitch, and your clearest product shots. Remember that first impressions are the most important.

• Submissions accepted until September 21
• Submissions posted from September 6-26
• Finalists notified on September 30
• Finalists posted the week of October 3

The early birds will get the worm. We won't be able to post everyone, and are currently reserving 30 slots in September. We'll notify you if we post you or if we don't, and reserve the right to decide editorially whether or not a submission is strong enough to share with the crowd.

Though you are allowed to ask your friends and family to vote, only one vote is allowed per person. If we find that any voting has been hacked and that one person has voted numerous times, we reserve the right to either throw out the votes we can identify or discount the submission entirely.

10 Things Every First Apartment Should Have

081211-boxknife.jpg Although the internet existed when I rented my first apartment, it was mainly chat forums and wasn't exactly full of the helpful information it is today. Ready to move out on your own for the first time? Here's a check list to get you started. Old pro? Add your basics to ours and help out those moving newbies!

1. Kitchen Basics: The important things that might top this list might be a can opener, sharp knife or wooden spoon. Check out this list at The Kitchn for more ideas on these essentials.

2. A Toolbox: You'll at least need a screwdriver (or two), a hammer, a tape measure, a level, adjustable wrench, and set of allen wrenches for all those IKEA purchases. The rest is up to you.

3. A Plant: Even if you kill it in a few months, the breath of life they bring to a space is unmistakable. If your thumb isn't exactly green, try a succulent that only has to be watered every few weeks.

4. Books: Even if you have a Kindle, a few books are always good to have around. Sometimes you just want to flip through the pages for inspiration or a little reading. If you're not big on collecting such things, make them classics that even a visitor might enjoy picking up.

5. Baking Soda & Vinegar: It doesn't matter what mess, mold, or grime the last tenant left, this combination of ingredients can clean just about anything. Save your money for other things like food and curtains to block out the view of your neighbor who refuses to wear a bath robe.

6. 3 Light Sources: Many apartments can feel lacking in light and often your first apartment isn't as awesome as you wanted it to be. Remember 3 light sources for your main room and it will always feel more like home. Plus, as a rule of thumb, all overhead lighting in apartments is ill-placed, too harsh, or too dim.

7. A Place To Lay Your Head: Yes it seems overly basic, but it's easy to get caught up in the smaller things you might need. Just because you think you can get away with sleeping on a futon doesn't mean your back will agree. Sleep comfortable and everything else, even the smallest space with the worst bathroom is suddenly tolerable.

8. 5 More Extension Cords Than You Think You Need: Unless you designed and built your own home, there's a 99% change your outlet ratio to products that require them will suck. Having a few extension cords or power bars on hand will save you frustration and trips to the hardware store later on.

9. A Box Knife: This small simple tool will save you a great deal of headache when it comes to opening moviing boxes, unpacking furniture or taking off zip ties held into new packaging that needs to be disassembled. You won't need it until you have no other choice but to go buy one and then you'll think back and say, "Apartment Therapy was right."

10. $50 Emergency Money: It doesn't matter if you keep it in the bank or stashed in your secret hiding spot, every first apartment has some sort of emergency. It might be the need to escape and have a night out, a lamp you didn't think you'd need or possibly a fan due to the lack of air circulation. Big or small, there will always be something.

The tipster who sent this $1.75M NYC listing over to Curbed NY deserves a medal—bringing such things to the attention of the Internet is a mighty worthy feat indeed. A snippet of brokerbabble, which says it better than we can: "This apartment is simply surreal, with a Jules Verne meets Tim Burton sensibility. This home is an incredible journey starting as you walk through the front door, which has been remodeled to resemble a submarine." Read more and view the rest of the photos on Curbed NY.

Rental Week: Western Addition Apartment Allows Cats and Dogs, Renters Rejoice

Rents go up during the warmer months, it's a fact. Which means we're probably not leaving our rent-controlled apartment any time soon. But what about transplants looking for their first San Francisco apartment? Or the socially-awkward souls who just can't do the five-roommate-Mission-flat thing anymore? This post is for them! We've scoured the craigslist, and this is what we've come up with. This week we're bringing you five apartments decent enough live in for under $1,750. We'll be posting one per day. Hooray!
6-7-11cl.jpg
Today we bring you a modern one-bedroom for $1,595. What's the catch, you ask? Well the listing does implore you to "PLEASE DRIVE THE PROPERTY FIRST TO SEE IF THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS FOR YOU!!" so maybe the agent thinks the neighborhood is not quite for everyone. Situated in the heart of Western Addition (or as a potential beau once said, "Lower Japantown"), you've got quite a few amenities nearby: Safeway for groceries, Fillmore Auditorium for shows, the police station for, well... other stuff. The unit itself looks narrow, but does have an open kitchen into a living area, with a separate bedroom at the front of the building. Dogs and cats are welcome, and there are quite a few parks nearby for doggy business. As far as transit goes, the 31-Balboa picks up on the corner and will take you to downtown, and the 22-Fillmore, a few blocks away, will take you basically everywhere else.

Erin Fetherston's Eclectic Apartment Vogue

5-26-fetherston-1.jpg

Erin Fetherston is a young fashion designer with one of the most beloved new brands in recent years, and her whimsical home overlooking the Hudson River combines the romantic French finds from her previous life with modern choices indicative of her new station in New York.

5-26-fetherston-2.jpg

The high ceilings and tall windows in the renovated Tribeca loft lend themselves well to both styles. Fetherston sticks to a pastel color palette and girly flourishes to create a space that is relaxing, but upon closer inspection you can always find something unusual in any vignette, from a stuffed sheep to plastic hand molds. It is this balance between pretty and interesting that makes all of Fetherston's work noteworthy, including her interior designs.

Video Interlude: Guy Can Tuck All 258 Square Feet of His Apartment Into Cabinets

Yesterday we watched with shock and awe as a guy in Hong Kong made 24 separate rooms out of his slick 330-square-foot studio apartment. Now there's Christian Shallert, a Barcelona-based photographer whose entire 258-square-foot apartment (kitchen, bed, bath, and all) can be tucked neatly into cabinetry. With a dash of this and a flash of that, Shallert can turn his empty cube—once a pigeon loft—into a sorta-livable space thanks to the clever design of Barcelona-based architect Barbara Appolloni. Watch the giddy Shallert as he leads a video "tour"—and we use that term loosely—of his home.

Rent, Don't Buy: Dungeon Apartment in "Cowboy Cassidy's" Basement Can Be Yours

× Like us and you'll find top breaking news in your Facebook newsfeed. Sign up for our daily email newsletter and get top stories and breaking news delivered to your inbox. Wednesday, April 20, 2011, by Sarah Firshein

As a general rule of thumb, folks who rent apartments on Craigslist try to avoid ending up in the landlord's dungeon. Yet the Los Angeles Times home blog encourages renters to reconsider, offering a story about the totally normal-sounding, affable George Ehling, an octogenarian who has been renting out the basement apartment—"bigger than a studio and smaller than a one bedroom"—in his Hollywood Hills home for five years. The subterranean space is clad with rocks that Ehling dug up in the backyard and affixed to the concrete walls; it's renting for $1,350 a month. One word of advice, though: in his earlier days, Ehling used to wrestle under the nickname "Cowboy Cassidy."

Apartment Therapy Web Designer Search

at.pngWe're looking for a great full-time web designer to join us in our NYC offices as we revamp everything from top to bottom this year.

In particular, we're looking for someone with strong graphic design and branding skills, who also has a very good working knowledge of HTML and CSS.

The first job will be to join in our redesign process with our art director, Thomas Porostocky, and work through a complete redesign for launch in September. With general look and feel being completed now, we'll be applying design to all of our pages and then working them into front end form. The more you can do with HTML and CSS, the better.

After that, you will be working on everything: site pages, email templates, cross browser compliance, media kits, and ad driven event campaigns. This last area - integrated ad campaigns - will be a big part of the job, as we work with advertisers to fit elegantly into our site.

To apply, please cover email with availability and resume to herma @ apartmenttherapy . com.
