Yet the Los Angeles Times home blog encourages renters to reconsider, offering a story about the totally normal-sounding, affable George Ehling, an octogenarian who has been renting out the basement apartment—"bigger than a studio and smaller than a one bedroom"—in his Hollywood Hills home for five years. The subterranean space is clad with rocks that Ehling dug up in the backyard and affixed to the concrete walls; it's renting for $1,350 a month. One word of advice, though: in his earlier days, Ehling used to wrestle under the nickname "Cowboy Cassidy."
