House of the Day: $15.9M Mansion is Michigan's Most Expensive Listing

Thursday, October 24, 2013, by Jeremiah Budin

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.
Price: $15,900,000
The Skinny: Located on four acres of land along Lake St. Clair, the Van Elslander Mansion, which hit the market this week with an ask of $15.9M, is Michigan's most expensive listing, and with good reason. How many other (28,000-square-foot) houses have both indoor and outdoor pools, a tennis court, basketball court, golf hole, eight fireplaces, and towering wall murals surrounding a curving marble staircase? The "luxury playground," as The Detroit News calls it, and accompanying mansion were constructed in 1991 for furniture magnate Art Van Elslander and his wife, and the Van Elslanders have occupied it ever since.
