We Think Bubble Activities Are Normal

A reader asks some questions. “Is U.S. dollar inflation about to take flight? Should we take comfort in expert assurances to not worry about a potential stock market crash? Are you adequately hedged against a bond bubble collapse? It seems like we haven’t run out of bear food just yet. In fact, I’m quite concerned about weight gain potential at this point.”

One said, “So let me understand this correctly. Stocks are poised for a fall. The bond bubble is poised to painfully pop. The Precious isn’t moving much. Cash is being eaten up by the price hikes in ‘needs.’ Treasuries are at the whim of Congress and/or the Chinese. Real estate is a risky proprosition at best. WTF is the retail investor supposed to do?”

A reply, “Start a business that provides something useful instead of expecting free money simply because you have money?”

One said, “What are you talking about? Our whole system is based on free money because you have money.”

From Bloomberg. “Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke minimized concerns that the central bank’s easy monetary policy has spawned economically-risky asset bubbles in comments at a meeting with dealers and investors this month, according to three people with knowledge of the discussions. The Fed chairman brushed off the risks of asset bubbles in response to a presentation on the subject from the group, one person said. Among the concerns raised, according to this person, were rising farmland prices and the growth of mortgage real estate investment trusts. Falling yields on speculative- grade bonds also were mentioned as a potential concern, two people said.”

“‘There’s a lot of disagreement about what role monetary policy plays in creating asset bubbles,’ Bernanke said on Jan. 14 at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy in Ann Arbor. ‘It is not a settled issue. Our attitude is that we need to be open-minded about it and to pay close attention to what’s happening,’ he added. ‘And to the extent that we can identify problems, you know we need to address that.’”

“The ‘first line of defense’ if bubbles emerge ‘needs to be regulatory and supervisory’ actions rather than changes in monetary policy, according to Bernanke.”

From CNBC. “Struggling companies that otherwise might not be able to stay afloat have found a friend in the Federal Reserve. The central bank’s cheap-money policies have allowed borderline companies to get low-cost financing thanks to investors who are thirsting for yield and buying risky bonds as the Fed keeps its target funds rate near zero.”

“Globally, high-yield bond issuance stands at a historic mark of $108.5 billion, buoyed by central banks around the world mimicking Fed policy and cutting rates at breakneck pace. Spreads between junk bond yields and their benchmark measuring sticks are at the lowest since 2007. ‘Everyone is running out there to raise debt,’ said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. ‘Of course the more speculative situations are rising.’”

“‘We’re keeping companies afloat artificially by the Federal Reserve’s cheap money,’ said economic strategist Michael Pento, head of Pento Portfolio Strategies. ‘The market isn’t being supported by real viable fundamentals.’”

“Stock market bulls use corporate earnings to bolster their case that equities are cheap, but those profits are likely inflated by the influx of debt used to keep companies going. ‘People are saying the economy’s doing great,’ Pento said. ‘They’re ignoring the fact that the ‘E’ in P/E (price to earnings) ratio is artificial. What would the earnings be if the real estate market wasn’t being supported by the Fed, if they didn’t have access to cheap capital, if the government wasn’t able to float this consumption bubble by sending transfer payments out? All of that is engineered by the Federal Reserve and government deficit spending.’”

From Bullion Vault. “According to Ben Bernanke, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, the pulling back on aggressive policy measures too soon would pose a real risk of damaging a still-fragile recovery, writes Dr Frank Shostak for the Cobden Centre. The Fed Chief is of the view that for the purposes of financial stability a continuation of the central bank’s aggressive stimulus conducted through purchases of Treasury and mortgage securities remains the optimal approach.”

“But is it true that a loose monetary stance provides support to economic activity? Furthermore, if this is the case then why after such an aggressive lowering of interest rates and massive expansion of the Fed’s balance sheet does the economic recovery remain fragile? Surely if loose monetary policy could revive economic activity then a very loose policy should produce very strong so called economic growth – so why hasn’t it happen this way?”

“Contrary to popular thinking, loose monetary policy, which leads to a misallocation of resources, weakens the economy’s ability to generate final goods and services, i.e. real wealth. This means that loose monetary policy not only cannot provide support to the economy but on the contrary undermines the foundations for economic growth.”

“The so-called recovery that Bernanke and most commentators are referring to is nothing more than the revival of various non-productive or bubble activities, which in a true free market environment wouldn’t emerge in the first place. These bubble activities are funded by means of loose monetary policies, which divert real wealth from wealth generating activities thereby weakening the process of wealth generation.”

The Manteca Bulletin. “The approach of spring is bringing with it a sound not heard for seven years - large earth moving equipment prepping land for new Manteca neighborhoods. New home building has started off 2013 strong in Manteca. The city issued permits to build 33 new single family homes in January. At that rate, Manteca could be pushing 400 new houses by year’s end.”

“At the start of July, the city had approved projects in one form or another that would add 18,477 housing units to the city or 80.3 percent more homes than currently exist. If all of the housing units are built based on current yields per household Manteca’s population would go from 70,000 today to almost 132,000.”

From Nevada Business. “With increasing sales and home values, Nevada’s housing market shows signs of recovery and strength not seen in recent years. However, against this growth backdrop, experts said the market is plagued by a significant problem—insufficient inventory. Sales throughout The Silver State reflect the great demand for homes. This is due to ‘reasonable’ prices and ‘drop dead low’ interest rates,’ said Dave Tina, president of the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors. ‘What’s the downside? There really isn’t any,’ Tina added.”

“Behind the sales are first-home buyers and investors. In Southern Nevada, for instance, about 50 percent of the resale activity is investors, said Dennis Smith, president of Home Builders Research Inc. What is helping inventory, Tina said, are investors flipping their houses and new construction coming online. ‘If the builders weren’t building, we’d be in worse trouble,’ he added.”

“In Southern Nevada, 5,900 new home permits were issued for 2012, a 58 percent increase over 2011, Smith said. Builders have purchased every subdivided lot in Las Vegas, which means if the land has been plotted, they can start construction immediately. New homes, for instance, are going up in Summerlin, Green Valley and Lake Las Vegas. ‘Everyone is building throughout the valley now,’ Tina said. ‘All the builders are building everything they can.’”

The Daily Ticker. “Economist Steve Keen tells The Daily Ticker the U.S. stock market is a giant bubble. But the key factor inflating it may not be what you think, according to the economist (i.e. he’s not pointing fingers at the Fed…at least not directly). Keen has his eye on margin debt. This is the money people borrow from their stockbrokers to expand their holdings of shares. Keen says the ratio is now 70%, meaning with $300,000 you can borrow $1 million worth of shares.”

“He sees what he believes is a stock market bubble bursting in the U.S. the way Japan’s did in the 1990s. The bubble popped in late 1989, and the Nikkei fell 63% in less than three years, but didn’t hit bottom until 2003. ‘I think we’re in a long slow bleed, much longer and slower than the Japanese stock market crash, but there’s similar dynamics,’ he predicts.”

“‘In 500 years time people will look back and see this as the biggest debt-financed bubble in human history and ask, ‘why didn’t we realize it,’ Keen says. ‘But we think it’s normal.’”

IMF Marxists Tax and Seize Personal Funds in Cyprus – Crickets Ensue

Very few things give me nightmares… Yesterday’s event in Cyprus was one of them and the media is conspicuously silent. What do you get when you combine worldwide Marxist elitists, bankers and the media? A worldwide depression and a new dark age. The IMF (in case you are wondering who they are) is using Greece as a proving ground for the rest of us. It is a fascist Petri dish. They just implemented an across the board tax on all bank accounts over a holiday with no warning and no recourse. 9.9% if you have over 100,000 Euros in the bank, 6.75% is you have less than that. This is money being seized by the IMF, the European Union and the government of Greece to attempt to cover some of their debt. It is theft and it could have been a lot worse. The IMF had proposed a 40% haircut on all accounts. This is how it went down:

Banks first cooperated with the EU by sealing off the amount of the proposed levy—a 6.75 percent tax on deposits under €100,000 and 9.9 percent on those above —making it impossible for depositors to access their full amount. The only means bank customers have left is the ability to draw from the rest of their funds via ATM machines this weekend. Many depositors made their way to the machines on Saturday to drain their accounts. But the few banks that opened on Saturdays did so only briefly, and no international transfers will be able to go through until Tuesday, with Monday being the holiday. Cyprus’ Parliament is expected to meet Sunday to pass the required legislation., or after the deed was done. The deal also needs the approval of several eurozone parliaments; at the time of writing it was unclear how fast they can act and what will happen to bank deposits in the meantime.

What’s happening in Cyprus should send a chill over the entire world.

Politicians working with complicit big banks need no rule of law; no parliament debates to close in on the bank accounts of average people.

The Daily Mail:

Cash machines EMPTIED across Cyprus and 60,000 British savers face losing MILLIONS after £8.7bn EU bailout imposes tax of up to 10% on all bank accounts

Lines formed at ATMs as people scrambled to pull their money out
Word spread that rescue package included a one-off levy on deposits
Restrictions stopping people emptying accounts or moving money abroad
Up to 3,000 British service personnel are based on the bankrupt island
President Nicos Anastasiades agreed to raid with European finance chiefs
Said country in ‘state of emergency’ and not acting would be ‘catastrophic’
But expats accused the island of ‘plain theft’ as violent protests sparked
Britons have about £1.7b of deposits on island and could lose up to £170m
Parliamentary official: Vote scheduled for today pushed back to tomorrow
G. Osborne: This is what happens if you don’t show you can pay your way
Never let an emergency go to waste, eh? Cyprus’ President claims he had no choice. I don’t believe him. He made a deal with the devil, saved himself and gave up his own people. Very reminiscent of Nazi Germany. It’s fascist deja vu all over again. By the way, they did this before it was approved of by the legislature. Think it can’t happen in America? One day you could wake up and be staring down the same seizures and soon. And Martial law and jackbooted thugs will not be far behind, trust me.

Over a number of years, the Marxist elitists in Europe and the United States (make no mistake, Obama and the head of the IMF are BFFs) have put in place draconian financial policies, regulations and bailouts that have cost Trillions – in fact, more money than actually exists on the planet by no small measure. This is not money out of thin air, these are taxes. Taxes taken while promising growth and recovery that has never materialized, never will materialize and was never meant to materialize. This is a step in a global reset of all markets and a planetary redistribution of wealth that would have made Marx blush and stammer. Remember, the US is a huge contributor to the IMF. You don’t actually think that Obama didn’t know about this and had input, right?

What happened yesterday in Cyprus was a test for the rest of us. What’s more, what was implemented will not solve the problem. What it will do is perhaps start worldwide bank runs and create chaos and riots, a la Cloward and Piven. The global Socialists are making their move and beginning to bring an iron fist down on individuals, their freedoms and their money. This has the potential to make the crash of 2008 look like Spring break. The Marxists are not limiting themselves to bank accounts; they are now going after retirement accounts, gold and whatever else they can grab as the whole scam starts to implode. The run on the Cypriotic banks and ATMs yesterday was just a taste of what is heading our way. The Deutsche Bank global head of FX strategy, Bilal Hafeez, was correct – only Jesus can save the EU now. However, I think He is more likely to speed their demise with all the money changing in His temple occurring and all.

From SHTFplan.com:

Restrictions have been imposed to stop people emptying their accounts or moving their money out the country after the Cypriot government announced that up to ten per cent of deposits will be seized and used to bailout the island’s crisis-hit banking system.

The deal with other eurozone finance ministers is the first time that ordinary citizens’ deposits have been directly raided in this way.

One furious expat said: ‘This is plain theft. I’d love to hear someone explain to me why it isn’t.’

Under the deal, all bank deposits over €100,000 will be hit with a levy of 9.9 per cent. Those with smaller savings will pay 6.75 per cent.

The move sparked panic and violent protests yesterday as crowds desperately tried to withdraw their money at cash machines.

‘Why would you risk putting your money in Greek, Spanish or Portuguese banks after this?’

British expats were stunned by the news, with many left high and dry by the restrictions on accounts.

Cash machines had been working, but many ran out of notes because of the panic withdrawals.

But financial experts said the raid – designed to stop Cyprus crashing out of the euro, potentially destroying the currency – would send shock waves through the eurozone.

If savers in other troubled nations fear their accounts might be next, they could withdraw their money and spark a catastrophic run on the banks.

Source: Daily Mail

In case you weren’t aware, Cyprus is a hub of offshore accounts. One of the biggest hurt by this move were Russian mobsters. But before you justify that, remember, people all over the world had their funds there. It all depends on how you define taxation:

As Market Ticker’s Karl Denninger notes, “Like hell that’s a tax. That’s direct confiscation of the funds of people who did nothing wrong!”

People need to wake up and fast because this train is coming to each of us and soon. There is no safe haven on the planet for money or investments now. The New World Order has arrived and it is hungry. A planetary government of elites who have colluded to strip the wealth from nations has descended to rip the fabric of civility apart and we are all on the menu.

I can’t put it any better than Mac Salvo:

It should now be obvious. There is no recovery. There never was.

No matter where you live, your government is likely preparing measures to deal with the coming financial and economic collapse. This means they are going to be coming for anything of value that they can get their hands on.

If you have the majority of your net worth allocated in bank accounts, money market funds, retirement plans, stock markets or the host of other ‘safe’ assets recommended by your financial adviser, then you are playing Russian roulette.

And in this version there’s a bullet in every chamber.

When they come, they will take everything they can.

You didn’t think all that ammo, arms, food and medicine was for a rainy day, did you? Well, if so, it is pouring. Our Marxist leaders have made preps for themselves, the rest of us be damned and we have just let them do it. Shame on us.

I’ll close with the prescience of Nigel Farage. Pity no one listened to him on this:

DHS deploying in Homeland with ‘weapons of war’

GUN RIGHTSMARCH 16, 2013BY: DAVID CODREASubscribe

What kind of domestic deployments does DHS foresee for its MRAPs, how many do they need for their mission, and who in Congress is providing balance of powers oversight on behalf of their constituents?

The sighting of a Department of Homeland Security Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) at a gas station near Ybor City, Fla. on Wednesday is raising questions, concerns and fears about what the federal government is foreseeing in terms of likely needs for such armed and armored transports. An additional big unknown at this time is what congressional oversight protections exist for if and when they are deployed in domestic situations.

Compounded by the administration’s now “on the radar” push to further restrict civilian firearm ownership, the recent controversy over the potential use of drones over American soil to kill citizens without due process, and a longstanding and documented train of abuses tied to the militarization of law enforcement activities, those who keep an eye on such things are noticeably distressed. In the absence of once-pledged administration transparency and a vigorous and motivated watchdog press, civil libertarians are left with only speculation, and some are wondering if the predictable result, keeping activists on edge, is intentional.

DHS-HSI Homeland Security Investigations El Paso SRT MRAP Armored Vehicle
Among stated concerns include the obviousness and normalcy of it all. The vehicle, with has stopped at a public gas station, is flying a big American flag and has the DHS logo prominently displayed on its side. The government is not trying to hide the existence of these platforms on U.S. soil, they are normalizing it. As an interesting aside, when gun rights activists do this with firearms by openly carrying them, “progressive” politicians try to gin up public hysteria and loathing, and even some ostensible Second Amendment supporters have been known to issue public condemnations as being unnecessarily provocative and harmful to “the cause.” But let Napolitano’s shock troops roll into the local Hess station, and aside from public fascination, the same countrymen who would react to one of their own being armed with disapproval or worse accept it without question, much as they do the presence of TSA at airports — and that should also concern the civil rights-minded.

So what can these babies do?

“Note that these beasts, which carry a squad of troops in the back, have a ring mount for belt-fed heavy weapons on the roof,” a source with extensive military experience tells Gun Rights Examiner. “They can throw an Mk19 grenade launcher or an M2 .50 caliber heavy machine gun on the roof ring mount at a moment’s notice. They have firing ports on each side, so that the Special Response Team (SRT) troops can fire their fully-automatic true assault weapons through the four-inch-thick windows, which are able to stop .50 caliber rounds coming the other way.”

And the administration does not trust We the People with semi-automatics (while designating their own select fire arms as “Personal Defense Weapons”)?

No wonder speculation is running at fever pitch in some circles, and that leads to wild speculation, which may or may not end up being wild enough. The problem is, with the lack of transparency, oversight and reporting, such speculation, when disputed, can, is and will be used to try to discredit (and ridicule) any who express related concerns, and one that is being so dismissed is a report that DHS has purchased “2,700 light-armored tanks.”

“The vehicles in question aren’t tanks and they aren’t for DHS,” “Running Wolf” blogger Michael Malone counters, along with a link to the procurement contract summary for 2,717 units by the United States Marine Corps. “[U]ntil someone shows me a procurement order for DHS, I don’t buy it.”

That’s a reasonable challenge and deserves to be taken seriously. It’s one that our representatives ought to ask about and demand a straight answer for.

“Some small portion of these MRAP’s may end up being given to the DHS, assuming the Marines have enough ‘extra’ that they are going to get rid of a few,” Malone continues. “Marines rarely do this. They are the land fighting arm of a procurement system that does naval fighting, so when they get something they tend to keep it a while.”

That’s more speculative on his part, and as long as that’s acceptable for him to do, it seems fair to point out that anticipated diminished operations in Afghanistan combined with the Marine Commandant advising his troops that sequestration necessitates drastic “Save every round, every gallon of gas” measures, belt-tightening could make the manning, staffing, storing and maintenance of so many APCs a logical drain to start plugging.

That also makes fair some additional questions raised by my former military source, who asks “How many of them does the DHS have? How many are they going to get? What is their stated mission?

“If you see these monsters, photograph them and post the photos on Twitter #DHSMRAP,” he advises, creating a stated intelligence-gathering mission for concerned activists.

“If you see them, report them,” he urges.

Depending on one’s level of trust for this administration and its Homeland Security Secretary, his dire concerns will obviously not be shared by all. What should be are his questions, and one should not have to go tracking down links and sorting through motivations and agendas to get straight answers. Above all, any debate should not be dependent on ideologically-based speculation.

We have an idea on the criteria used to deploy SRTs, which raise concerns of and by themselves as to what should constitute a legitimate need for such force. Adding MRAPs into the equation is cause for even greater scrutiny.

Unless they agree that a purpose of DHS should be to incite fear and to create an impression of absolute supremacy to a populace occupied by a standing army, which is kind of difficult to square with the core servant government purpose “to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,” any congressional representatives not openly seeking these straight answers, as well as controls outside of the executive branch to ensure against abuse, is either being negligent in his or her duties or deliberately indifferent to them.

Globe Trotting: A Rare Parisian Work by Robert Mallet-Stevens Asks $3.9M

Though historically overshadowed by his famous contemporary Le Corbusier, Robert Mallet-Stevens was one of the most influential early modernists and his series of buildings on Paris' Rue Mallet-Stevens are regarded as some of the finest extant examples of French modernism in an urban context. Built for twin brothers and prolific sculptors Jan and Joël Martel, this magnificent studio is the most celebrated of those buildings, occupying a prized corner location. Despite a 2005 retrospective at the Pompidou Center that raised the profile of Mallet-Stevens' work, this sprawling 1,800-square-foot one-bedroom has been lingering on the market for a few years now. Certainly impractical for a family, the legendary building would make for an expensive architectural trophy at $2.9M.

? Historic photographs of Mallet-Stevens' work are limited, thanks in part to his request that his archives and records be burned following his death. A limited record of this particular house's 1927 completion survived thanks to photographs taken for Therese Bonney's Bonney Service, an architecture and design-focused illustration wire that supplied press photos to American newspapers. These press photos (above) captured Joël Martel standing in front of his glistening new home, along with a glamour shot of the studio's sweeping staircase, which has changed little in the intervening 86 years.

? Elsewhere in the 16th arrondissement, Mallet-Stevens built a towering fire house, his only public commission. Completed in 1936, the building served as both station and barracks, along with some family apartments arranged in a tower at the rear. The station is still standing today, a testament to Parisians' respect for the past, even as the once brilliant facade remains caked in a layer of urban grit.

? Until recently, some of Mallet-Stevens' most impressive rural works were similarly neglected. This country villa, completed in 1932 and altered by the architect in 1947, was built for Paul Cavrois, an industrialist from the city of Roubaix, near the Belgian border. Commandeered by the Nazis during World War II, the Villa Cavrois was reworked by Mallet-Stevens in the post-war years to accomodate Cavrois' extended family, but by the late 1980s, it was abandoned and soon ransacked. In 1990, the house was designated a historic monument; by 2001, the French government had purchased the property and begun restoration work. Set to open to the public later this year, the restored Villa Cavrois will show off the architect's then-futuristic vision of an amenity-rich household, with in-wall radio speakers, a vacuum system, and an intercom phone system.

? The architect collaborated frequently with the artists and sculptors of his day. Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka lived and worked out of another Mallet-Stevens studio in the 1930s. She kept the space strikingly minimalist (above), save for an upstairs bar designed by the artist's sister, an architect. De Lempicka threw storied parties in the studio, which further heightened her celebrity, and some say won her art much of its popularity.

7 Ways to Rescue a Rental Kitchen

Rental apartment kitchens can often be the most difficult to personalize. Unlike other rooms, the kitchen is already furnished, like it or not. Don't despair - there are still temporary ways to cover an old appliance or disguise ugly flooring and walls.

Cover the Floor The best way to keep your attention off that ugly flooring is by putting a rug on top of it. Outdoor rugs, like this 5'x8' Chevron Rug from World Market, are ideal for the kitchen because they'll survive food messes. $127.49
Line Your Drawers and Shelves Lining your shelves and drawers can help hide ugly old laminae and dirty drawers. This Real Simple Easy-Cut Shelf & Drawer Liner from Bed Bath & Beyond is $7.00/roll but there are plenty of other optoins out there.
Install Roll-Out Drawers in Your Cabinets At about $50 each these Bamboo Roll-Out Cabinet Drawers from The Container Store may seem a little steep for dressing up a rental kitchen, but you can take them with you when you leave. And once you've installed these roll out drawers where there were once plain ole shelves, you'll never go back.
Disguise Old Appliances If your landlord is clinging to that old refrigerator, consider temporarily disguising it. This Black Side by Side Custom Refrigerator Cover from Appliance Art will disguise the old fridge and make it feel more modern. $84.95
Put Some Light on It Adding under cabinet lighting, like this RATIONELL LED Lighting from IKEA, will help brighten up the kitchen counters. $49.99
Cover Ugly Tile If you're dealing with ugly tile in the kitchen, consider covering it with wall tiles, like the FASTBO from IKEA. For a temporary application, use sticky-backed velco to apply the panels to the wall. $29.99
Switch Your Hardware Replacing the hardware on your cabinets can provide a quick and affordable facelift. Be sure to choose hardware that matches the holes already on the cabinet and drawer fronts. This Martha Stewart Living Medallion Cabinet Hardware from The Home Depot retails for $1.99/each.

This list is just a starting off point. How have you rescued your rental kitchens? Share your tips in the comments to help other renters overcome their ugly kitchens.

posted by Parnassus on 03.16.13 at 10:01AM I agree with covering the flooring. Our first apartment had cheap tiles with no grout in between where the glue came up and every crumb and dust bunny the first week we were there stuck permanently. Wish we had thought of a temporary solution instead of looking like slobs.

posted by Acrimonious Jess on 03.16.13 at 11:13AM I use dollar store plastic bins on my shelves and even in the fridge. Not quite as good as the rollout drawers but close enough for the money saved. If you group baking supplies or whatever you can just grab the whole bin when you need it and put it all back easily when you're done. I've got larger tubs in some cupboards that fill the whole shelf and slide in and out partway. You're already partly packed if you need to move too.

posted by maynelander on 03.16.13 at 11:39AM I agree, I do that too. They act like drawers, but if they don't work in your next kitchen, you can just use them for something else!

posted by Lauren {L'amour chez nous} on 03.16.13 at 01:02PM I lived in an apartment for six months last year and the counters were really gross as previous tenants had never heard of cutting boards. I went to the dollar store and got some large thin cutting boards in a pretty pattern and velcroed those to the counters after cutting them to size. I also made sure to line the inside of all the cabinets and drawers as they were that really cheap pressboard that looks icky once it's been wet.

(I also use bins to group items in my pantry. I grab the baking one and everything's there but the flour.)

posted by TravelingRae on 03.16.13 at 01:09PM Best remedies I have used:

1) keep it super clean and clutter free
2) replace chrome rings, grease catchers and sometime elements/knobs on stove
3) swap out the lights, faucet, and add a dimmer
4) under counter lighting
5) paint if you can, if not distract with large, colour rug, art, or small appliances.

posted by Lynne M S on 03.16.13 at 02:59PM Try suggesting changes to the landlord in a letter with pictures of why it would benefit tenants and them in the long run. Tell them what is wrong with the current item, that you think it is ugly doesn't count. Is it hard to clean, is it chipping, peeling, water stained? Will it make the apartment easier to clean and maintain? Will the changes you propose be classic and appeal to future tenants making it easier to rent? Sometimes if you are willing to live with a little bit of construction, so that the landlord does not lose rent, you get a better kitchen and or bathroom. It never hurts to ask in a polite respectful letter documenting both in writing and with pictures the problems and the possible solution you would like and how the solutions would benefit the landlord. Send the letter certified mail return receipt requested. We did so in our apartment and our landlord willingly installed white subway tile and repainted the kitchen. It was three weeks of mess but we got an easy to clean and very attractive kitchen. I am still working to see if we can get a stainless steel double drainboard sink from Elkay in our kitchen used is fine with an integral backsplash as our current Formica countertop with drop in sink is suffering with a lot of water damage.

posted by tenantproof on 03.16.13 at 04:04PM Peel and stick tiles are also a great fix for rental floors. They really do come up easily with a hair dryer - I found out when my toilet got replaced by one with a smaller base and I had to install two new tiles.

I posted some pics of my rental kitchen yesterday, with some other temporary fixes I used. Saying that, I did have the okay from my landlords to do the painting.

posted by leigh516 on 03.16.13 at 11:13PM I personally dont like the idea of rugs in the kitchen. We placed a vynil flooring. It is semi easy to cut to size and they can be of a lesser cost. We spend about €40,-. Also plants help made it personal, fruits, accesoires and magnets.

posted by Femma J. on 03.17.13 at 04:32AM Yes for the contact paper on cabinets, even counter tops, if your landlord lets you, some don't! Install new quality design knobs, window treatments, kettle, trash can, etc. I also covered my counter with slabs of stone on felt pads and wood cutting boards. The sink area had to be kept dry to avoid mold, but it worked well for 3 years. posted by virtuelsie on 03.17.13 at 04:36AM I don't get what the issue is with "being allowed" to paint or not If u can change the wall colour to something u can live with, you can certainly take it back to white before u leave!! Just do it!

White Wall Solutions: Oversized Artwork — Renters Solutions

Oversized030813-1_rect540

Here at Apartment Therapy we're big fans of the gallery wall, and have sung its praises at length over the years. But for renters, all that measuring, arranging and hammering might not be the most practical solution.

A better one could be the impact of a single, oversized piece of artwork — nothing brings a white wall to life faster or more completely. Take inspiration from these rooms, all of which use the "white walls + big art" formula with aplomb.

Favorite it below!Name:CarlyLocation:Nashville, TNDivision:United StatesWhat do you love about your bedroom?:It's cozy and functional. There's really nothing fancy about it - it's very us! We really utilized every inch to make it work for our family. I love the natural light it gets and I've always wanted a white bedroom! This is my first attempt at making it happen. I also love having a record player in this room. Makes for great nights reading in bed and romantic evenings. What are your tips for creating a beautiful, healthy and organized bedroom? One thing my husband and I have been strict on is not having a TV in the bedroom. It really makes it a retreat. We actually ended up getting rid of all of our TVs and our whole place feels like there is more room for conversation and creativity. Also, I think having some symmetry helps make it feel organized. In modern homes, bedrooms have become more than just a place to sleep; they can be a retreat, a home office, a library, a relaxation zone. What are some ways you make the most of your bedroom? My husband and I both work from home so having separate office spaces is important. Adding a desk to the closet in the bedroom has been great. And when the day is done, I can just close the door! The chair even fits in the closet. It's perfect.Entry-bannerYou must have Javascript enabled to vote in contests.See more My Bedroom Retreat entries
