[Three Cents Worth #247 NY] Manhattan Unit Sizes No Small Change

Posted by Jonathan Miller - Friday, September 20, 2013, 3:52 PM

It’s time to share my Three Cents Worth (3CW) on Curbed NY, at the intersection of neighborhood and real estate in the capital of the world…and I’m here to take measurements.

Check out my 3CW column on @CurbedNY:

After last week’s rental market report release, I thought I’d take a look at the average size of a sale and a rental over the past 20 years. Sales (blue line) represent co-ops and condos that closed during each period. Rentals (pink line) represent rentals that closed during each period…

How Do I Take My Small Kitchen from Frumpy to Fab? Good Questions

0202_gq02.jpgQ: I need your help to decorate and maximize the space in my apartment kitchen!! I have lived here for almost 3 years and I have yet to find the decor than transform my urban kitchenette from frumpy to FABULOUS!! The dimensions are small and narrow, 4ft. x 8 ft., and I want to maximize the most of my space. I don't know if I should paint or do artwork behind the pantry door or just move out!! As small as the space is, I spend a lot of time in my kitchen making great meals for my family and friends. If you guys can help make my kitchen look as great as my food, I will be totally in your debt!

Hawaii State Motto Haka Tiki Mou Sha'ami Leeki Toru Men's Tee Shirt in 12 colors Small thru 6XL

Hawaii State Motto Haka Tiki Mou Sha'ami Leeki Toru Men's Tee Shirt in 12 colors Small thru 6XLPulse plugs are a radical departure from spark plugs. Their physical dimensions are the same as spark plugs because they have to interface with the engine and ignition system just like spark plugs. But this is where the similarity ends.

Pulse plugs incorporate a pulse circuit, which stores incoming electrical energy from the ignition system and releases the stored energy in a powerful pulse of power. Instead of 50 watts of peak power typical of all spark plugs, pulse plugs deliver up to 1 million watts of peak power.

Squeezing Shelving into a Small Bathroom Renovation

wc52611.jpgInitially, upon seeing this little bathroom renovation, I was excited about that extra shelf to the left of the sink. Having lived with a pedestal sink in a small bathroom before, I understand what a nice little spot this provides to set your things as you're getting ready in the morning. But i was even more impressed when I saw the other shelf:

0526_willy01.jpg

At about the height of the toilet seat, another shelf runs along the wall, hugging right around the pedestal base of the sink. This provides even more storage in what could easily have been left a storage-less bathroom. Great place to store extra rolls of toilet paper, some folded towels, lesser-used toiletries.

0526_willy02.jpg The renovation by Willy Marshall continues the theme of squeezing in extra storage shelves by including a shelf nook at the back of the room, over the bathtub. Again, terrific place for shampoos and folded towels!

Spiral Staircases for Small Spaces Shopper's Guide

Staircases aren't something one usually shops for, but you might build a loft one day and find yourself in need of a space-saving design that looks good and fits your budget. There are two main options when it comes to stairs: custom built (generally more expensive) and kits (which tend to be cheaper). Here are 10 sources for both — some high and some low.

Arke: Arke is a US subsidiary of an Italian company that sells in the US through Home Depot, Lowe's and other stores. They offer DIY spiral staircase kits, starting around $1,500, that can be assembled and customized to fit your space. Serett Metal Work: Owner Joshua Young has made a name for himself as a designer of unusual staircases. His Brooklyn-based studio does custom work, and their expertise rests in traditional blacksmithing, contemporary metalworking, furniture making, and fine art.The Iron Shop: Like Arke, this company sells spiral staircase kits that can be assembled by a home DIYer. They offer online shopping and ordering, and their kits come in both modern and Victorian styles in a range of colors and finishes. Kit pricing ranges between $1,000 and $2,500.MILK Design: Chicago-based MILK design was started by two former construction workers, Joe Colosi and Pawel Korczakowski. With a range of custom pieces built for Christian Liaigre for Holly Hunt, they create high-end staircases and railings in the Midwest.Mylen Stairs: They've been in business for 50 years, and they sell both custom spiral staircases and modular "econo" kits. Based out of Peekskill, Nyew York, they ship their kits nationally, can provide drawings to architects, and have a service line you can call for installation advice.Spiral Stair Warehouse: Based out of Broomall, Pennsylvania, they sell metal spiral staircase kits that come with 8 structural parts. They have five available sizes, and you can call for information about how kits and installation work.Salter Spiral Staircase: Headquartered in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, they sell kits in steel, wood, aluminum and galvanized steel. They have residential and commercial sales departments — call for a price quote.Spiral Stairs of America: This Erie, Pennsylvania company sells standard and Deco-style spiral stairs, in both kits and custom designs. Their stairs comply with the standards of BOCA, CABO, IBC, and IRC.Duvinage: They describe themselves as "the oldest" manufacturer "of custom spiral stairs and circular stairs in the United States," and they've built staircases for the White House and the National Gallery of Art. Based out of Maryland, they sell both prefab kits and do custom work.Precision Pine: Their spiral staircase kits are all made from wood and start around $2,600. Based out of Knoxville, Tennessee, they offer mostly traditional styles.
