On the Market: Pacific Heights Manse Seeks Victorian Enthusiast and $5.5M

Wednesday, September 26, 2012, by Sally Kuchar Broker babble tells us that this big abode is "grand and elegant," and we're going to have to agree. So grand and elegant, that we'd feel bad if we wanted to switch out the Louis XVI stool for something a little more modern like an Eames LCW chair. And yes, while we understand that the furnishings are not included in the sale, it's hard to imagine this home without all its glamourous antiques. The 5-bed, 4.5-bath, 5,000 sq. ft. home just landed on the market asking $5,500,000. The original details have been meticulously preserved, but "tasteful updates" have been added. Property highlights include over four fireplaces and a legal inlaw apartment to help with those mortgage payments. The only bummer we can find is that there appears to be no elevator in the 5+ story house.

392923_1_0.jpgThe last time we checked in with 145 Magnolia was back in late January when it plopped back on the market with an asking price of $2,995,000. In 1998 the original structure was demolished and the 5-bed, 4.5-bath, 4-level contemporary Marina manse you see to the right was finished and ready for its close up by 2000. It sold that same year for $2.8M. We're happy to report that while it didn't get asking asking, it did manage to pull in $2,850,000. Congrats to all parties involved! [Redfin/Curbed]

On the Market: Tinkle the Ivories in Texas Manse With Piano-Painted Stairs

Finally! Something to compete with guitar-inspired landscape design and guitar-shaped pools: a Houston, Texas home with a staircase painted like a piano. Unquestionably the standout feature here, the artwork adds a little Motown-meets-Hard Rock Cafe vibe to an otherwise sober setup. Listed for $447K, the home happened to have been built in 1984: the exact same year that piano master Stevie Wonder released a little smash hit by the name of I Just Called to Say I Love You.

On the Market: Opulent and Contemporary Pacific Heights Manse Hits the MLS

Friday, February 24, 2012, by Sally Kuchar 2828 Jackson Street in Pacific Heights last sold in late 2007 for $3,325,000. Shoot forward to today and it's back with a bigger price tag: $4,200,000. The 4-bed, 4.5-bath abode has an open floor plan that's "ideal for today's lifestyle." Broker babble also tells us that it's packed with "luxury, designer finishes and fine craftsmanship." The location can't be beat, especially with its close proximity to Alta Plaza Park and Fillmore. What say you, dear readers? Think it'll land a buyer? We should also mention that the 3-story pad has a 2-car garage.

Currently serving time in Nevada for kidnapping and armed robbery convictions that stemmed from a memorable memorabilia incident, the widely-reviled former running back O.J. Simpson hasn't been able to keep up with the mortgage payments on his Miami-area home. Even if he doesn't lose this property to the bank, Simpson—who moved to Florida from Los Angeles in 2000 and purchased the four-bed, four-bath house for $575K—may never see the inside of this place again. He's 64 years old and currently serving what could amount to a 33-year sentence. Though they say Florida is a terrific place to live out your twilight years.

That's Rather Awesome: Behold the Manse With Awesome Guitar-Shaped Landscaping

Thanks our due to the fine folks over at Zillow Blog for brightening this Monday afternoon—they've apparently taken a break from eating Saltines just long enough to unearth a most unusual listing located some half-hour outside Birmingham, Ala. Set on 27 acres, the gargantuan manse, built in 1997, boasts 15 bedrooms, 22 bathrooms, a 25-seat home theater, a 2,000-bottle wine cellar, as well as interior details (antique light fixtures; marble, limestone, and maple flooring; mahogany doors and windows)—and this is proudly touted in the brokerbabble—completed by International Fine Art Conservation Studios, the firm that worked on the finishes inside Buckingham Palace. Also on the property: a guest house, two poolside cabana houses, a barn with living quarters, an outdoor riding ring, four pastures, and, we're assuming, lots more. Clearly the coolest thing about the place is that guitar-shaped landscaping, which the listing agent calls "just a whimsical, great idea," on the part of the owner, a businessman with no ties to the music biz. He's selling it like a rockstar, though, with an ask of $17.9M.

On the Market: Inside Warren Buffett's Former "Fit for a King" Beach Manse

Curbed LA has noticed that the glistening white Laguna Beach, Calif., home that used to belong to Warren Buffett is asking $4.995M, a modest figure compared to the $6.495M the place wanted when it was first listed in March 2009. The business magnate bought the four-bedroom, four-bathroom house in 1996, surely enjoying the glass walls, remodeled interiors, oceanfront views, and strip of private beach for years before selling it in 2005. According to the listing, the manse is located in the swank community of Emerald Bay, which features six community tennis courts, beach volleyball courts, a pool, spa, and parks. Not a bad slice of the good life!

When Blake Whitesell, founder and CEO of the Whitesell Corporation died tragically of cancer, his 21-year-old son Neil took over the reigns of the private manufacturing company. Over the next 25 years, the young upstart has grown the business from humble beginnings to a profitable conglomerate, at least profitable enough to build the largest home in Collier County, Fla. The Naples megamanse, currently close to completion, measures 32,000 square feet on 1.56 acres and will include six bedrooms and ten total bathrooms.

House of the Day: Moroccan-Style Manse Might Make Houston Neighbors Wince

× Like us and you'll find top breaking news in your Facebook newsfeed. Sign up for our daily email newsletter and get top stories and breaking news delivered to your inbox. Monday, June 27, 2011, by Rob Bear

Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day? Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.

Location: Houston, Texas
Price: $8,900,000
The Skinny: After a tipster slipped us a link to this Moroccan mansion in Texas, we checked and rechecked the location. Surely, this convincing replica couldn't be planted in conservative Houston, but no, it was, all 20,000-square-feet of it. In the inner courtyard, vistors wouldn't be blamed for thinking they were ensconced in a Marrakech manse, with tile detailing, fountains, and no view of neighboring McMansions. With eight bedrooms, eight baths, two guest houses, pool cabanas, and a petting zoo, this palace isn't without its extravagances. At least the owners brought in an authentic Moroccan architecture firm, Arabesque Moresque, to design the unique structure.

Celebrity Real Estate: Price Chops Aplenty for Mel Gibson's Relisted Malibu Manse

× Like us and you'll find top breaking news in your Facebook newsfeed. Sign up for our daily email newsletter and get top stories and breaking news delivered to your inbox. Tuesday, May 31, 2011, by Rob Bear

After some less-than-politically-correct statements and the box office flop of his most recent flick, The Beaver, controversial film star Mel Gibson has relisted this Malibu property for $11.75M. Set on 2.56 acres, the six-bedroom Lavender Hill Farm was first listed for $14.5M in March 2010 and was most recently asking $12.75M with no takers. With no mention of Mr. Gibson or a "celebrity owner," the listing cites the estate's many virtues: 5,500 square feet, flood-lit tennis court, media room, gym, three guest houses, and a "a 2 story entertainment pavilion with built-in BBQ, fireplace and kitchen." Gibson might not be able to find much work lately, but will he find a buyer for his palatial pad?

In January, Yankees captain Derek Jeter finished up work on a nearly 31,000-square-foot estate in Tampa, Fla., smashing building records for the area. The home is so big that local residents have nicknamed it "St. Jetersburg." Amusing, right? Not so much, if you're Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner, who went on the record by saying, "Sometimes you celebrate too much, players concentrating on building mansions and not concentrating on winning." While A-Rod just bought a swank pad in NYC, to our knowledge Jeter is the only one who's spent recent months building one from scratch. "I am not singling anybody out," Steinbrenner maintains, "but maybe riding the wave of '09 was too much." Sure!

Today TMZ goes inside the home of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, which was put on the market two days ago. And it is exactly as one might expect from the vivacious nonagenarian—gold-leaf mirrored dining room table, crimson walls, canopy beds, horse busts, lavish hutches and sconces, and more. The photogallery above comes courtesy of Gabor's husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt. Not sure his self-guided tour will convince someone to spend $28M, but it's worth a look.

Slap-happy nonagenarian Zsa Zsa Gabor and hubby Prince Frederic von Anhalt have just listed their Howard Hughes-designed megamanse for $28M, reports TMZ today. The couple has used only two of the 8,000-square-foot estate's 26 total rooms for a while now and apparently can no longer justify the $30K monthly rent. A much better option for Gabor, who recently had her right leg amputated and has since been publicly good-natured about the surgery, is their much smaller Westwood, Calif., condo.
