Park Life: The Easily Accessible McCoppin Square in the Outer Sunset

Everyone loves Golden Gate Park and Dolores Park, but did you know San Francisco has over 220 parks and open spaces? Curbed SF wants to bring fame and glory to some of the smaller, lesser-known parks, and we're doing so with our series Park Life. Each week we'll spotlight a different San Francisco park or open space, and bring you all the details you need to plan a visit.

Located in the Outer Sunset, McCoppin Square is a medium-sized neighborhood park that runs directly next to a San Francisco light rail line, making it easily accessible for all. The park draws its name from one of San Francisco's first post-gold rush mayors, Frank McCoppin, an Irish immigrant who also lends his name to a Mission district street and a neighborhood elementary school.

Where it's located: In the Outer Sunset district on Taraval Street. It is bounded by 22nd, 24th and Santiago streets.

What it features: A large lawn covers a significant area of the park, but there is plenty of room for a tennis court, baseball diamond, basketball court, recently renovated playground and tables and benches.

How to get there: No excuses for not checking this one out because the L light-rail drops you off right in front.

Dogs allowed?: Yes, but the ubiquitous on-leash rule applies here.

Don't miss: Movies in McCoppin Square. Every Friday night in October a large display is erected and family movies are played for the crowd. The free shows are sponsored by the City and County of San Francisco, so go check 'em out next fall.
