Sold Stuff: Interior Designer Nate Berkus Sells Off NYC Duplex for $5M

Designer Nate Berkus has sold his NYC "dream home," just nine months after it featured in a full spread in Architctural Digest. Alexander Gilkes, a co-founder of the online art bazaar Paddle8, paid $4.95M for the Greenwich Village duplex, which is set inside a pair of combined townhouses, in an off-market deal. Barring the (ample) cost of renovating, this sale stands to net Berkus a healthy $1.6M profit. Not bad, considering the apartment is a fourth-floor walk-up. The 3,000-square-foot space houses three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a handsome, Berkus-redesigned kitchen. The one-time TV host—his show was cancelled last year after two seasons—has kept busy as a designer lately, but will return to the small screen this fall with Renovation Nation on NBC.

Meanwhile, Berkus has been buying and selling properties with varying degrees of success. His Chicago co-op finally sold in January for $1.6M, after two years on the market and more than a million dollars in price cuts. In April, Berkus listed his other NYC property, a petite one-bedroom in the West Village, for $699K, which was listed as sold at the end of July. Berkus seems to be abandoning New York for Los Angeles, where his newly renovated home was, you guessed it, recently featured in another glossy shelter mag.
