This week's selection of open houses for your weekend browsing pleasure were selected for the Newsom clan. As we're sure you already know, the former San Francisco Mayor-turned-Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and family packed up and left their Ashbury Heights home this week and are temporally living with Mrs. Siebel Newsom's parents at their home in Ross over in Marin County. They left San Francisco because their four bedroom house wasn't big enough for their expanding family, as they already have one child and Mrs. Siebel Newsom is pregnant. All of these homes are within Marin County lines, and all of them have at least five bedrooms. Happy hunting, Newsom family!
Size: 5-bed, 4.5-bath; 5,500-square-feet
Price: $6,375,000
Pitch: "This magnificent gated estate on a sunny flat lot, manicured gardens, mature trees with meandering brick and flagstone paths throughout, represent the beauty and understated perfection characterized in the Craftsman ideals. Ideal for the growing family with four large bedrooms on the second floor."
Our Take: Let's get the "family first" stuff out of the way: walking to the Ross School takes just a few minutes, same goes for the the Lagunitas Club and the trailheads of Mt. Tam. And would you look at that backyard? There's a pool (and a pool house), of course, but there's also tons and tons of grassy and wooded areas for the children to play. Ross is also the same town that Jennifer's parents live in. Now, onto the fun stuff. It's got a really beautiful solarium. Absolutely gorgeous. But what do you expect when you're shelling out over six million dollars for a house? Every inch of the home is going to be perfect. Especially the formal entry, which is dripping with opulence.
Open House: Sunday 1 to 4PM Location: 12 Saint Lucia Place, Tiburon
Size: 5-bed, 5.5-bath; 5,050-square-feet
Price: $4,395,000
Pitch:"Architecturally stunning home and guest house with the finest materials, technologies and finishes. Resort-like outdoor living with pool, waterfall, 2 spas, 150' deep-water boat dock. Guest house has two bedrooms and a kitchenette. There's 3 garages for up to 7 vehicles."
Our Take: This seems like too much of party pad for the Newsom family, but we thought we'd throw it in for good measure. If the children eventually learn to love the water, this could be their dream home! Or at least a great location to throw parties when the 'rents are out of town. Although the home's interiors reek of a Real Housewives set (coved lighting, faux wall finishes, gilded things, domed ceiling, etc), we think the Mrs. and her decorator would have a blast remodeling the abode.
Open House: Sunday, 1 to 4PM Location: 71 Marina Vista Ave, Larkspur
Size: 5-bed, 3-bath; 3,358-square-feet
Price: $2,450,000
Pitch: "Prepare to be wowed! Renovated/rebuilt, this chic 5 bedroom, 3 bath home is a secluded paradise. Decks, lush gardens, patio area for entreating, and views."
Our Take: Well, it's certainly one of the smaller homes we're suggesting, but it seems like a place where a mother and her small children could easily nest. We love the hill setting and the outdoor patio. At $730 per square foot, this is definitely one of the less expensive properties.
Open House: Sunday, 1 to 4PM Location: 240 Round Hill Road, Tiburon
Size: 5-bed, 4.5-bath; 3,578-square-feet
Price: $2,995,000
Pitch: "Contemporary connected to the outdoors with views of the Golden Gate Bridge & Bay. Defining luxury, this 5-bed, 4.5-bath home offers an open floor plan leading out to a level yard in a desirable neighborhood. The light, south-facing space is maximized for entertaining with multi-functional rooms. A sumptuous master suite has french doors leading to a private terrace with sweeping Bay views.
Our Take: It might be too contemporary for the Newsom family. There's a ton of right-angles in this home, which creates a nightmare situation when you've got a couple of toddlers running around. But! The open floor plan does give you ample opportunity to constantly keep an eye on the kids. We'd mention that the glass on the staircase will be a hotspot for the tiny fingerprints, but that's what the help's for, right? The property is located close to the ferry that takes you to San Francisco, so Gavin will have no problem making sure he makes monthly appearances.
Open House: Sunday, 1 to 4PM Location: 117 Hillside Avenue, Kentfield
Size: 5-bed, 3-bath; 2,947-square-feet
Price: $1,299,000
Pitch:"Stunning architectural treasure with walls of glass, soaring ceilings & intricate cross beams patterns in every room. Enter through the atrium foyer to this home with a spacious open kitchen and cozy breakfast nook. The woodwork in the dramatic living room and separate dining will take your breath away. An updated master suite with fireplace & limestone bath await you for a good nights sleep."
Our Take: This property is most likely too hippy for the Newsom clan, but it's still a site to be seen. And at $1,299,000, it's the least expensive home we're showing you today, and the closest price to what their Ashbury Heights home was bought for. We have no idea if anyone in the family has a green thumb, but if someone does they're in for a treat, as there's so much foliage packed into this place.
Open House: Sunday, 1 to 4PM
