In classic Berkeley fashion, there's been a brush fire raging over Freada Klein and Mitch Kapor's plans to build a new house on Rose Street, and this week demolition began on the dilapidated 1920's house that stood in the way. While the immediate neighbors supported the new construction, it seems like everyone else in Berkeley had (and still has) an opinion over the size of the Lotus software mogul's house and its accompanying subterranean ten-car garage. The Berkeley City Council denied an appeal of the Zoning Board's approval late last week. The Klein-Kapor's lot is large enough to absorb the project in 40% of the lot area and it fits within the buildable envelope. Additionally, the ten-car garage is mostly for visitors, since parking on Rose Street has always been problematic, plus they're putting in a turn-around at the end of the street where there was none previously. Comments in Berkeleyside's fourteen previous posts have that cluck-cluck you're-destroying-the-planet attitude from people who seem overly attached to someone else's shrubberies, although the project fits within Berkeley's green construction parameters. Probably it just means that critical thinking in Berkeley tends towards the Apocalyptic. So how green is an underground garage? Not much, but it's greener than street parking, if only because storm-water runoff can be managed. And a whole lot more attractive.

On Saturday, a Long Island developer made good on his promise to demolish Land's End, the Gold Coast estate said to have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. CBS News was there to catch the gruesome act on camera and interviewed owner and developer Bert Brodsky, who waxed poetic about the house and its history just minutes before a metal claw tore through the fine woodwork. The grand columned mansion had certainly seen better days—as a set of old listing photos revealed last month can attest—and Brodsky says he and his son had "no choice" but to demolish the aging summer cottage. The dilapidated home languished on the market, priced at $30M, before the father-son duo decided to redevelop the 13-acre property into five luxury homes priced at $10M a piece, so their claims of poverty are a little shaky at best. Get all the history, demolition footage, and developer grandstanding in the video, after the jump.

Demolition: Steve Jobs Can Finally Tear Down His Historic 1925 House

Steve-Jobs-House-0217.jpgDoes anyone remember the year 2001 as it pertains to the history of Apple? 'Twas most momentous—a little product known as the iPod first hit the market, and it was at the time billed as a "breakthrough MP3 product that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into an ultra-portable, 6.5 ounce design that fits in your pocket." The other important thing that happened for the company in 2001 was that CEO Steve Jobs applied for a demolition permit for the house he had lived in since the '80s, the historic Jackling House in Woodside, Calif. Ten years later, the preservationists have relented, permits have been granted, and demolition begins on the 17,250-square-foot Spanish Colonial Revival house this week. Jobs has plans to build a more modern (and modest) 4,910-square-foot house in its place. That's no comfort to certain folks at the National Trust for Historic Preservation; one went on the record and said, "Jobs does demolition because brains, billions and some Buddhism don’t buy wisdom or even basic respect for others." Burn!
