04-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly.jpgWe already know renting with pets adds time, money, and stress to the life of a San Francisco tenant. But did we know that pet friendly rentals on Craigslist are great for decompression? Alternately hilarious, ridiculous, and occasionally quite comforting, these ads offer hours of fun for you and your pets. We’ve picked a few for your enjoyment and organized them as follows:

The Good:

The General’s House in the Presidio (Pope and Upton)

pict_6640_0.jpgYes, the rent ($13,250) makes you gag, but then you see the place, and you start salivating. It’s disconcerting, we know, but our advice: Divide up the each bedroom, rent out part of the living room, do whatever it takes with as many roommates as needed to dial this in. You get not only the historic Georgian Revival General’s house (So you can say, with complete honesty, “We live in the General’s House. Come over for a party!”), you get 4 levels of it, 7 bedrooms of it, 4.5 baths of it. And you get the Presidio. Your pets strongly approve.

The Bad:

This ad’s listed as “$3155 / 1br - Group Exercise Classes San Francisco (SOMA).” We call this one bad because A) the price and b) the title. Our dog, reading over our shoulder, ventured the following response: “Geez, those are expensive exercise classes.” Sure, they come with a 1 bedroom apartment in the Avalon building, but still. We find it hard to believe anyone with a pet that’s not actively contributing to the family income can swing that much dough. And P.S.: Pets like yards and parks, not granite counter-tops and in-house health clubs.

The Ugly:

500740_p42.jpg650 Ellis Street: Ellis Street Apartments

Not only is this part of the city fairly unattractive, the unit itself, a studio for $1295, seems sized for a 2-dimensional figure, a cartoon someone whose pets, ala Garfield and Snoopy, take up no actual space. Also one of this pad’s listed features is “NO VIEW,” an advertising decision that seems to confirm our point about the aesthetics of the Ellis between Larkin and Hyde. Worst bit of all: breed restrictions on dogs. Come one, now, ‘Loin ‘lords! If there’s one neighborhood having a pit bull would be helpful, it’s this one.

A good person in Albany, N.Y., has taken to Craigslist to seek $200 for his six-drawer dresser and attached mirror, with the possibility of negotiating in a matching night stand. Look closely, however, and certain other of this person's proclivities become clear. It appears that the posting has been removed since Reddit got ahold of it, but meanwhile another swastika-themed Craigslist Albany ad lives on. Writes a New Lebanon, N.Y., man whose neighbor whose garage bears "a Nazi flag with swastika and Maltese cross": "[...] we had a slight screaming encounter about the boudary [sic] dispute."

Craigslist Chorales: "Most Kick-Ass Fucking Roommate That Ever Lived" Seeks Home

hqdefault.jpgEnthusiasm is rare on sleepy, sweltering Friday afternoons, which is why the person who took to Craigslist with an unbridled zest for life deserves some due attention. The posting, which first surfaced on Gizmodo, was written by a 25-year-old "professional marketing agent with experience at bad-ass companies in New York Fucking City." (Sorry to offend, but the F-bomb appears 16 times in his ad. Brace.) Anyway, this fella is headed out to San Francisco and has $1,000 per month to spend on shared housing. Some of his selling points: he turns off lights, he cleans toilets, he even cooks—"I'll fry green tomatoes, cover them with marinated crab meat and smother that shit in bearnaise. EVERY. GODDAMN. NIGHT." Plus—and this is really a big one—he's not racist: "A lot of people ask me, 'Hey, you're from Alabama. Are you racist?' And, the answer to that question is, no. I'm not racist or judgmental at all. I love everyone. I'm a secular humanist. I FUCKING LOVE PEOPLE." He implores interested parties to email him, after which he'll provide all his vital stats: "I'll hook yo ass up with Facebook links, background checks, credit reports, phone numbers, resumes, references, awards, sexual history, pictures of karate trophies and a list of the top 10 women I'd like to bang before I die." We're done with this clown: just read the full post below.

Craigslist furniture ads with three exclamation points officially have us at hello, particularly ones that scream the words "Couch of Gods!!!" Turns out some guy in Auburn, Ala., is trying to pawn off just that on Craigslist for the majestic price of $150. Here's a snippet from the posting: "What's this? A couch? No, my friend, it's THE couch. This is the practical decorum of your upholstered dreams. Don't believe me? The next time you dream, take a close look at the furniture. This couch is there, chillin' like a boss in the corner. This couch has Inception'ed your mind (pics for proof.)" Later, he points out, "[T]his couch has a treasury embedded in it. Need a quarter? Reach in and grab a damn quarter. Endless supply. The snack machine won't even see your suave ass coming, you quarter-toting playboy, you." We can't say it's the best Craigslist couch ad of all time, but it's a close contender.

Outdoors Week: Incredibly Sad, Sorry Outdoors Spaces Advertised on Craigslist

NYC1.jpg

People use Craigslist for all sorts of things, from exploiting the Rapture to selling off pathetic-looking mattresses that are endowed with sexual preferences. Much like Craigslist personal ads, its housing and real estate pages are rife with people lying through their teeth. (They are also rife with Photoshopping adventures, which is why all the photos shown on this post are reproduced exactly as they appear in their Craigslist ads. Authenticity, people!) Take this NYC apartment (above), which seeks a roommate pay $1,650 for a room with an attached "800 square foot private outdoor roofdeck!!!!!!!" We'll give the post author due credit for possessing outdoor space anywhere in downtown Manhattan, but to describe that slab of asphalt with the words "Yes, it is private and amazing"? We thinketh not, friend!

NYC2.jpg
? Keeping things in NYC for a second, here's a plea for a "chill" third roommate in an East Village duplex penthouse. Truth be told, $1,500 is not an astronomical sum to pay for such accommodations in Manhattan—and that roof deck does look pretty sweet—but "2 mid 20's girls. We are friends and hang out often" and "One works and the other is an entrepreneur so works from home half the time" are two must-heed warning signs. Never mind the use of the word "chill" to describe a human temperament.

Philly1.jpg
? A housing share in the Philly suburb of Conshohocken boasts a
"[n]ice back yard with gardening space able to be shared," but one would never know it from these photos. There is, however, a cluster of tulips. a rusty-looking hose reel, and some rakes—always a plus when you're asked to drop $600 a month to share a space with "2 nice, well trained dogs & 2 indoor/outdoor cats."

Miami1.jpg
? Truth be told, this five-bedroom, 4,500-square-foot Plantation, Fla., house asking $750 a month is not a bad deal, not at all—two living rooms and a poker rooms are included in the deal. The pool looks awesome, too—oh wait, there seems to be one of the "30 year old male working professionals" jumping in.

Miami2.jpg
? Also near Miami is a 1,450 square-foot three-bedroom townhouse whose tenant is searching for someone to pay $600 a month. There are supposedly "outdoor living spaces," but all the evidence points only to the driveway and backyard parking spot.

LA1.jpg
? Out West, there's a two-bedroom, one-bath house asking USC students to pay $800 per month. *We have beautiful landscaping with Malibu lights that is very pleasant and we provide free gardening service," the ad claims. Yet all that's apparently from the the photo is an sad, sorry empty lot and a house with a sign on its head. C-O-L-L-E-G-E!

On top of the Core77 home page today: editors' picks of the best "stuff" (in general) from last year, including a bookshelf that looks like a hamster wheel, the cover of the first issue of Interiors magazine, and a wire-loop chair. Plus, there's pretty much the coolest Craigslist-themed illustration of all time (above). Consult it the next time that "authentic midcentury chair" begs to be sold.
