Innovation Week 2011: Five Game-Changing, Solar-Powered Vacation Getaways
Situated an hour's hike into the wilds of northern India, the Shakti 360° Leti eco resort looks a lot more modern than one might expect. The solar-powered compound also uses recycled grey water, composts to dispose of food waste, and only utilizes local produce in its kitchen. While the positive impact on the environment certainly appeals to potential visitors, we're pretty certain that it was the remoteness of this stacked-stone getaway, rather than a green building ethos, that drove those design decisions. That said, walls of glass and a minimalist aesthetic appeal to both the left and right brain. A three-night, four-day package, including guided trekking, costs a heady $1,916 per person.
Photos: Personeni Raffaele Scharer? This tiny, modern, solar-powered mountain hut in the Swiss Alps was formerly a tiny, aging, decrepit mountain hut in the Swiss Alps. Retaining as much of the original structure as possible, the place was renovated and is now powered by a solar panel. That's partially owing to the difficulty of stringing electric lines up to this rock outcropping at 6,069 feet. The sleek interiors are complemented by raw concrete brought in to fortify the structure. Needless to say, the views are utterly stunning.

? Just when we got to thinking that the only cool solar-powered escapes were to be found in far-flung locales, this stateside beauty, set in the foothills of Washington State's Cascade Mountains, proved us wrong. Designed by Seattle-based Eggleston Farkas Architects, the Nighthawk Retreat is a sleek mountain retreat that's not only powered by solar panels, but also utilizes further green tech that won it an award of "Sustainable Merit at the Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards."
? Thankfully, not all solar-powered homes are clean-lined modernist creations. This wood-framed home in Big Bear City, Calif. has a boring beige-on-beige color scheme and far-from-distinguished furnishings, but it's still powered by the Cienaga Creek Ranch's solar array. Nightly rates start at $650.
? The sun-drenched deserts near Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California are ripe for solar power, and this understated country escape takes full advantage. The mid-century structures sit on five acres of solitude, and rent for as low as $75 per night. Still, the name, Rattler Ranch, is more than a little off-putting for the snake averse.

Renters Week 2011: The Holidays Are Quickly Approaching... Take a Vacation That Doesn't Require a Plane Ticket
Vacation rentals: something the greater Bay Area is rich with. And with the holidays quickly approaching, we thought we'd offer up some seriously swoonable vacation rentals that will make you want to get the hell out of town, Thanksgiving or not. Here now, a small sampling of our favorites. As expected, Tahoe listings were plentiful, as were Napa Valley abodes. Let's start with Tahoe.
The really expensive:
Where: West shore of Lake Tahoe
The skinny: This villa's rates are across the map, so choose your dates wisely. Nights start at $2,500 and top out at $8,286. The minimum stay is at least 3 nights in the off season and a week during the busy months. There are nine bedrooms and the entire abode sleeps 18 folks, so if you and 17 of your closest friends would like to crash here while you hit the slopes, you're looking at $973 per person for the week (lowest rate). Property highlights include 12,000 square feet of "glamourous yet relaxed lakefront living;" 145-foot pier with one of the "few cribbed slips on the lake;" full-bar and a "spacious wine cellar and tasting room."
The reasonably priced:
Where: North Upper Truckee
The skinny: Weeknight rates start at $200 and weekend rates at $500. It can be as high as $700 for the weekend during the Winter. You can nab the place for the week from $1,250 to $1,500. There are four bedrooms but the 2,300 square foot cabin sleeps 10 total. Not a bad rate at all if you and a few of your besties want to take a weekend getaway. We're talking a couple hundred bucks for your own cabin in South Lake Tahoe.
The "we're on a tight budget:"
Where: Heavenly Valley
The skinny: This property's within "walking distance from Heavenly Valley Ski Resort." The cottage has two bedrooms and sleeps six. There's a minimum of a two day stay and the weekly rate is $400. If you want it for the weekend, it'll run you $150 for the whole abode. That's $38 per person for two couples. You can also rent it per week night at $65 per day.
The beautiful Napa Valley
The really expensive:
Where: RustRidge Ranch in St Helena
The skinny: $7,000 for the week or $3,500 for the weekend. This working ranch with a vineyard and a winery on the premise has five bedrooms and sleeps 14. The ranch is located on a lot of six hundred acres of "accessible natural land." You can take a yoga class on the tennis court, a dip in the pool, or a host a picnic under the grapevines.
The opulent and decadent deal:
Where: Napa Valley
The skinny: Peak weekends are $325, midweek is $250, and it's $1,500 for the week. During the holidays, there's a 3 night minimum. The Stoddard house was built in 1898 and has mature gardens, vaulted ceilings and a double parlor. It's a quick drive to St Helena Hwy and just a 10 minute walk up historic First Street to the heart of downtown Napa.

Globe Trotting: Quintessential French Vacation Homes: Normandy to the Riviera
With their famously long vacations—a government mandated 30 days of vacation per year—the French are well-versed in the fine art of kicking back and relaxing in the summer. Well-heeled Parisians regularly flee the heat of the city, taking up summer residence in the pastoral hinterlands or the sunny Côte d'Azur. For those averse to the glitz and glam of the Riviera, the quiet countryside of Normandy beckons with this 300-acre estate. On the market for just under $9M, the grand 17th-century chateau features 11 bedrooms, eight bathrooms, well-proportioned public rooms, thatched-roof pool house, and spacious barn. It's in need of some renovation, but with a full month of vacation, there's plenty of time for elbow grease.
? With pale blue shutters, beige facade, and a tile roof, this country house in Aix-en-Provence strikes the perfect French country pose. The well-worn spread, currently on the market for $5.4M, looks to be in need of a touch up, but the rustic swimming pool fringed by wildflowers is country chic at its best. There aren't many interior photos—which is always a bit worrying—but the charming look and views of the oft-painted Mont Sainte Victoire are enough to trick anyone into buying a lemon.
? Deep-pocketed buyers looking for more space would be wise to head inland from the pricey properties on the Mediterranean to Lorgues. For $16.4M, this country compound offers the amenities of a resort in the guise of a private home. From the vaulted wine cellar to the heated swimming pool with faux beach, this estate has plenty to woo buyers away from sea views. Unlike many Provencal properties, this one has been fully updated with modern electronics and finishes.
? The storybook French look can be found in Cap d'Ail, just outside of Monaco, where traditional pomp-and-circumstance meets the Mediterranean. That rare combination doesn't come cheap, as this five-bedroom Belle Epoque mansion can attest. It is currently listed at $23.4M, which, like the frou-frou decor, seems a bit much.
? Located just outside the famed surf spot Biarritz, this modern villa boasts broad panes of glass that capture hilltop views of the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately, prospective buyers will have to ask to see the price, which is somewhere between $3.3M and $7.2M. Given the condition, we're going to guess the upper range, because, in this ritzy area of southwestern France, eight bedrooms, seven baths, and a swimming pool don't come cheap.

That's Rather Lovely: Vacation Home Hugs the Mountainside—Then Decides to Let Go

Photo: Eirik Johnson/WSJ
A fascinating Wall Street Journal feature this morning profiles the second home of Boston-based architect Warren Schwartz, who set out to build a home that would mimic the feeling of standing on the precipice of the Grand Canyon. Enter this, a skinny structure that slopes down a hillside and cantilevers 45 feet outward and 14 feet above ground. "I thought it was going to be a ranch house," wife Sheila Fiekowsky told the Journal, later "admitting she, too, was nervous when her husband told her he wanted to have half the house float in the air." Well, no kidding! Still, that floating portion has glass on three sides, soaking up views of the countryside. Big thumbs up.

Rental and Vacation Real Estate Opportunities
Homes in the college town of Cedar City Utah are available to residents that are looking for a place to live while raising a family. Centered on the I-15 corridor that reaches down through the state of Utah and on through to Los Angeles the town of Cedar City offers many new homes to people that are working for the local economy. With a large college population and the annual Shakespearean Festival that draws in visitors from all over the Western US the real estate has to offer is allowing some people the opportunity to pick up a vacation home that ensures their accommodations for the festivities that take place during the summer. For college students that can afford to buy one of the homes for sale, it offers an opportunity to rent out the rooms of a house and live rent free during a four year stint at the local university.
Close to many wilderness attractions that bring hunters to the great outdoors the new homes offers are ideal for people that enjoy outdoor recreation and the sense of community that comes from living in a thriving, yet smaller city. With a low crime rate and the friendliness of neighbors who greet every passerby with a warm smile the population of Cedar City is growing. With the neighboring city of St George only 30 minutes away via the freeway there are opportunities to live in Cedar City and commute to St George that are more reasonable than most of the suburban commutes from the metropolitan cities of Salt Lake or nearby Las Vegas.
