Moonlighting: Dreamboat Brad Pitt Shows the World How to Wear a Hard Hat

Welcome to Moonlighting, a new Curbed column in which the talented Raina Cox of If the Lamp Shade Fits takes a look at design players whose first job may not have been design. Some triumph, some flop, and some should never, ever give up their day job.

For Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt, role playing the mythical warrior Achilles or a pugilistic figment of Ed Norton's imagination pale in comparison to his dream job, that of an architect. The actor believes dreaming up buildings taps into primal childhood instincts, once saying, "Architecture is like play to me. As a boy, you play with Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Legos, and you get interested in how things are made, like cars and drills and all that. Years later you come back around to what interested you as a boy. Now if I have something that I'm dealing with that's causing me a lot of stress, my mind goes to architecture. I walk around the yard and start thinking about what I need to do to the house structurally. It's similar to puzzles in that way, like a crossword puzzle or anything else I can put my mind into. It's a relief for me."

In 1994, Pitt scooped up a small estate in the Los Feliz area of L.A. with a Craftsman-style main house and two outbuildings. Tackling the smaller structures first, the actor was bitten by the architecture bug. His initial fascination with Mission-style building evolved over several years into a love affair with contemporary design, and he gave up collecting Tiffany lamps and concentrated on carving six-ton bathtubs out of travertine boulders. He imported tons of the stone from a quarry near Rome sheathing walls, laying floors, carving counters, and creating enormous water features.

Describing his design journey with the property, the actor waxed poetic. "As I work my way through it, I have become a lover of all architecture," he said. "I am fascinated and obsessed with where it's going. Like art and music, architecture reflects society and where society is heading." Pitt cited Tadao Ando, Rem Koolhaas, and Frank Gehry as his favorite architects.

In 2001, Pitt and his blushing bride-at-the-time Jennifer Aniston bought a $14M Normandy-style mansion in Beverly Hills. Proving that yes, celebs are just like us, new husband Pitt's decorating aspirations were relegated to the basement. He hired Gehry to design a wine cellar to house the couple's $5M collection of rare vintages, later describing their initial meeting as "just about as much fun as I've ever had." The two forged a friendship, and Gehry included Pitt on the design team of a controversial seafront redevelopment in Hove, England. The actor's involvement was announced in 2005 to spur new interest in the project, which had stalled out after two years. Pitt was assigned the task of designing a restaurant and a penthouse for a luxury high-rise building. The project was scrapped in 2009 when the credit crunch forced the developer to pull out.

Pitt's and Gehry's design-based bromance must have taken a sour turn during the Hove collaboration. In December 2005, when asked about their friendship, Gehry responded that he had only met Pitt twice—once in his office for two minutes and again at a dinner. Burn! They later made up and Gehry's firm submitted one of 13 "green" designs Pitt commissioned in 2007 as part of his "Make It Right" project in New Orleans. The actor personally committed $5M to help rebuild the Hurricane Katrina-devastated Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood. Though the initial goal was to build 150 houses in the project's first two years, less than 35 homes have been built to date and homeowners have been less than pleased with the results.

Yet Pitt remains devoted to the cause of eco-conscious building practices. In 2008, he teamed with L.A.-based architecture firm Graft to announce the construction of "an 800-room luxury hotel and adjoining leisure complex" in Dubai. The yet unbuilt five-star property aims for LEED Gold certification. Pitt also narrated e² design, a PBS documentary about sustainable design around the world. The series, which ran three seasons, focused on innovations in the fields of green living, architecture, and transportation.

MOONLIGHTING: Lenny Kravitz, Lover of Louche, Decorates Like a Rock Star

Welcome to Moonlighting, a new Curbed column in which the talented Raina Cox of If the Lamp Shade Fits takes a look at design players whose first job may not have been design. Some triumph, some flop, and some should never, ever give up their day job.

For rocker Lenny Kravitz, collaboration isn't limited to the recording studio. Since the late '90s, the musician has been buying and renovating properties around the globe with the help of well-known architects and interior designers. Kravitz's process is famously symbiotic, with the line where his input begins and the professional's work ends often blurred. Frequent project partner designer (and Diddy's personal decorator) Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz once told the New York Times that "[Kravitz] knows styles and proportions and color."

Kravitz has always found harmony in music and decor, explaining, "I had the regular kid room your mother makes for you with the nice shelves and everything is nice and matchy. Then I started listening to Hendrix and Kiss and Led Zeppelin." Proper rock god worship mandated constant redecoration—"I would always move things to give me the right ambiance to listen to music."

Kravitz's first large-scale project was a traditional Biscane Bay, Fla., manse he dubbed Villa Roxie after his mother, actress Roxie Roker. The outcome was a decorating discord between Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz's clean, contemporary classicism and the rocker's love of a louche 1970s look. Later, a more successful collaboration with architect-designer Michael Czysz on a Miami Beach ranch house resulted in a design mind-meld of epic proportions—a shagadelic synthesis of Hugh Hefner's early Playboy clubs and the film A Clockwork Orange.

In 2005, this multi-hyphenate officially added "designer" to his resume with the formation of Kravitz Design. No longer limited to his own real estate portfolio, Kravitz could now unleash his decorating prowess on the world. "[Interior design] was something I did on the side, in between albums and tours," he said. "But how many houses can I buy and sell? How many times can I change one house that I've lived in? I want to do interiors, furniture. I want to do architecture, although I'm not an architect. Nor am I a trained interior designer."

For his house, a 215-year-old Creole cottage in New Orleans, Kravitz channeled a look he coined Bordello Modern. With a cacophony of influences, including classic French forms, Baroque prints, animal skins and foil wallpaper, the musician managed to create a very expensive version of Z Gallerie's signature look. The place was listed for $775K in Oct. 2010.

Kravitz also laid claim to the initial work done on his penthouse in NYC even though Noriega-Ortiz had a hand in the design. The apartment languished on the market for years before Kravitz brought Noriega-Ortiz back to freshen it up. After a literal whitewash, the home sold within a few months to singer Alicia Keys.

Other Kravitz Design work has included two commercial projects in Miami Beach: a recording studio for the Setai Hotel and the Florida Room piano lounge at The Delano. The rocker has also dabbled in product design with a chandelier for Swarovski and a collection of psychedelic wallpapers for Flavor Paper. Have a look at selects from his portfolio here:

Moonlighting: Venus Williams Puts a Little Tennis Elbow Grease Into Interior Design

Welcome to Moonlighting, a new Curbed column in which the talented Raina Cox of If the Lamp Shade Fits takes a look at design players whose first job may not have been design. Some triumph, some flop, and some should never, ever give up their day job.

Screen-shot-2011-01-27-at-11.24.35-AM.jpg

Not content to dominate the world of professional sports, tennis superstar Venus Williams—named one of the world's most powerful women by Forbes last year—fancies herself a creative soul. She produces a line of tennis wear, is a published author, and happens to head her own interior design firm, V Starr. Founded in 2002 near Williams's winter home of Jupiter, Fla., the company was set to take advantage of the early Aughts building boom. V Starr soon ran afoul of the Sunshine State's strict interior designer licensing laws by operating for a year without a license. It was sidelined with a cease-and-desist order from the Florida Board of Architecture and Interior Design and rallied by filing the proper paperwork.

Williams again stepped over the center mark by calling herself a "certified interior decorator" in the firm's literature, which at the time was a no-no under the notoriously strict Florida law. Williams's "certification" came from Certified Interior Decorators International, a private organization that requires members to pony up $295 in yearly dues, pass a 40-question exam, and hold a certificate from a recognized interior design program. Yet Williams's design education consists of a still-unfinished correspondence school course that she frequently tweets about; her decorating "credentials" are no longer mentioned in V Starr promotional materials.

But Williams is enthusiastic about decorating and draws parallels to her sport. "Design mirrors tennis as you have to find a new design solution for every project, every new space, each new city, and understand the nuances of each client," she writes on V Starr's official website. "I love taking in the varied architecture of different countries."

Given her busy tour schedule, Williams isn't able to devote much time to V Starr. "She really enjoys meeting with the clients at the initial meeting, at first design and at installation, depending on her schedule," said a former project designer with the firm. The company's brochure promises all clients only a basic meet-and-greet with Williams.

So who hires a tennis champion to decorate their home or business? V Starr has designed McMansions for sports stars, a model for a high-end Florida builder, and the studio of PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley. Oddly enough, even when he was dating dating William's sister and fellow tennis legend Serena, film director Brett Ratner did not choose V Starr to decorate his Hollywood home.

That's the official word! But for our take on it all, click through this photogallery of projects from the V Starr portfolio:

It seems Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler isn't the only statewide elected official moonlighting for a private firm.

Last week, Gessler--a newly-sworn-in Republican--sparked a firestorm of criticism when he told the Denver Business Journal that planned to continue part-time work at his old law firm in order to pay the bills. Gessler's dual role as Secretary of State and part-time employee at an election law firm (Gessler says he won't try election cases) is being called a recipe for conflicts of interest by some.

Now, Sandra Fish reports for AOL's Politics Daily that Colorado's new State Treasurer, Walker Stapleton, also plans to moonlight at his old firm, a real estate investment company.

Fish reports that Stapleton could earn up to $150,000 as a consultant to SonomaWest Holdings Inc., in addition to the $68,500 he will earn as Treasurer.

Luis Toro of the ethics watchdog group Colorado Ethics Watch told Fish that his organization is examining state laws to determine whether to file a formal complaint against Gessler or Stapleton.

Meanwhile the liberal organization ProgressNow Colorado is attempting to pressure Gessler into dropping his plan to work with his old firm. Gessler has no such plans, telling the Denver Post he "doesn't care what ProgressNow thinks."
