I was ogling the home of Rachel Been and Ben Brown when I came across this simple shelving solution that I immediately wanted to recreate! Always on the hunt for useful and stylish storage, I was instantly drawn to what they call their "invisible bookshelf."
I've been in love with the Helmer rolling metal drawers from Ikea since I saw my roommate rolling hers into our new apartment 4 years ago. With blatant disregard for whether she felt I was "copying" her, I immediately got my own.
Since, I've been trying to rationalize the purchase of a second. With our new studio in the house, from which we actually do a lot of work, I've been getting close to that rationalization. I'm pretty sure this idea, seen done so well in the home of Rachel and Ben, seals the deal.
They've simply put two Helmers next to one another and a large, thick piece of lucite across the top, creating a shelf! Easy as pie, and super good-looking! With 5 minutes of searching (which, admittedly, seemed like a long time to find something on the internet) I located eStreetPlastics, where you can buy 1" thick pieces of polycarbonate, seemingly cheaper than other resources. A few people have vouched for them, but I haven't actually ordered from them. Yet.
