"They degrade the neighborhood," Milo Hanke, past president of the neighborhood group San Francisco Beautiful, said. "They are visual blight." When San Francisco bought the building at 1650 Mission Street in 2007, it came with a legal billboard facing highway 101. It's the only billboard the city owns, and could generate at least $324,000 in five years. Critics, however, would like the billboard permanently removed. Recently, the Board of Supervisors financial committee approved a five-year contact that will bring in $324,000 to help cover the building's operation costs. The board is expected to vote today on the billboard contact. [SF Examiner]

Not In My Bureaucracy: The Richmond: Mural Police Sniff Out & Cite "Pop-up" Billboard

It's not Banksy or Shephard Fairey by any means, but about as legal. And far less interesting. A mural doubling as a Lexus advertisement on the side of a commercial building at 8th & Clement was cited by the Planning Department as an illegal, unpermitted mural. One that was apparently intended to last as long as it took for someone to 1. complain and 2. get it cited. Richmond Sf Blog has the story. No mention of fines, but the Planning Department citation calls for the building owner to apply for a permit to remove the sign. Must have been the same people who turned in the vintage Bernal Heights Coke sign. Who knew anyone in Bernal ever went to Clement Street? It's so far. On the flip side, we may see more of these quickies as building owners try to increase their ROI one step ahead of neighborhood watchdogs.

Off The Market: Angelyne, She of Billboard Fame, Sells Pink California Condo

We learned a long time ago that if your name is Angelyne, your decor is indubitably pink. Our cousins over at Curbed LA report that the condo owned by the '80s billboard pinup queen has just sold for $600K. We're assuming the new owners have set aside extra funds for a decorator.
