Alison's Floor Plan: Learning To Plan Using Free Software — Liveblogging the Style Cure

Alison's Floor Plan: Learning To Floor Plan

Usually I rock this one old school: graph paper, pencil, ruler. But I figured that for the Cure it was high time I learned something new: how to make a floor plan on the computer. More info on what I used and how I used it after the jump.

After checking out a few options online, I finally settled on Sweet Home 3D. The popular MyDeco looks a lot classier, and doesn't require a download to your computer, but it was full of preset furniture, and since a bunch of the furniture I have is used or vintage, I needed a program where I could adjust the sizes of all the furniture (which you might be able to do in MyDeco — I just couldn't work out how).

Once I had measured everything in the room, it was easy to draw the room on the program and pick furniture pieces and adjust their sizes accordingly. Then I could turn pieces on and off (by clicking the "visible"), rotate them and move them around the room. Being the self-confessed furniture Tetris junkie that I am, this was awesome: moving furniture, minus the sweat. There's also a side-by-side window where you can look at, and rotate, the 3D version of your floor plan! Here's mine:

If you compare the floor plan to my before photos, you can see that a lot of pieces are currently turned off. After hearing feedback from readers, I have virtually moved out a bunch of furniture from the room, and grouped remaining pieces into like functions: sleeping, dressing, playing. What do you think? It's still a bit "bowling alley-ish", isn't it. Any ideas on how to overcome this?
